Why Yoga Works for PCOS
A 2019 randomised controlled trial published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that 12 weeks of yoga practice in women with PCOS significantly reduced LH (luteinising hormone), testosterone, and anxiety scores compared to conventional exercise. Yoga works through three primary mechanisms: reducing cortisol, improving blood flow to the pelvic region, and stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system.
Pose 1 — Baddha Konasana (Butterfly Pose)
How: Sit with feet together, knees dropped to sides. Hold feet with hands, gently flap knees like butterfly wings.
Duration: Hold 2–3 minutes
PCOS benefit: Opens the inner groin and hips, stimulates ovaries and uterus, improves pelvic blood circulation.
Pose 2 — Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Butterfly)
How: Lie on your back, bring soles of feet together, let knees fall to sides. Place hands on belly.
Duration: Hold 3–5 minutes with deep breathing
PCOS benefit: Deep relaxation of the reproductive organs, reduces menstrual pain, calms the nervous system.
Pose 3 — Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose)
How: Lie on back, bend knees, feet flat. Press into feet and lift hips. Clasp hands underneath.
Duration: Hold 30–60 sec, repeat 3×
PCOS benefit: Stimulates the thyroid and reproductive organs, strengthens pelvic floor, improves circulation.
Pose 4 — Viparita Karani (Legs Up the Wall)
How: Lie on your back with legs resting against a wall at 90 degrees.
Duration: 5–10 minutes
PCOS benefit: Reverses blood flow to the pelvis, reduces swelling, calms the adrenal glands, excellent for stress-driven PCOS.
Pose 5 — Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)
How: Lie on stomach, bend knees. Reach back to hold ankles. Lift chest and thighs off floor.
Duration: Hold 20–30 sec, repeat 3×
PCOS benefit: Stimulates the reproductive organs and adrenal glands, reduces menstrual irregularity.
Pose 6 — Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)
How: Lie on stomach, palms under shoulders, lift chest while keeping pelvis on floor.
Duration: Hold 30 sec, repeat 3×
PCOS benefit: Stimulates ovaries, reduces stress hormones, strengthens the back.
Pose 7 — Malasana (Garland/Squat Pose)
How: Deep squat with feet slightly wide, palms together at chest.
Duration: Hold 30–60 sec
PCOS benefit: Opens hips and pelvis, stimulates digestion and reproductive organs, improves pelvic floor strength.
Pose 8 — Nadi Shodhana Pranayama (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
How: Sit comfortably. Close right nostril with thumb, inhale through left. Close left with ring finger, exhale right. Inhale right. Exhale left. This is one cycle.
Duration: 10 minutes daily
PCOS benefit: Balances the autonomic nervous system, reduces cortisol by up to 25%, directly calms adrenal PCOS.

When to Practice
Morning practice is ideal — it sets cortisol rhythm for the day. If mornings are not possible, evening practice before dinner is excellent for sleep quality. Avoid inversions and twists during heavy menstrual flow days.
